A brief intro to this occasional newsletter...
After over 6 years of full-time freelancing — combining investigative reporting, translation, editing, and occasional book and film reviews — I’ll soon join the spanking new and incredibly promising news outlet Arizona Luminaria as a staff reporter.
Most of my work over the past years has been for The Nation, The Intercept, the El Salvador-based investigative outlet El Faro, along with the occasional piece for The Atlantic, The Washington Post, In These Times, Business Insider, The Baffler, etc, etc. I’ll continue to freelance for some of these (and other) outlets even as I concentrate on Arizona Luminaria. I have a couple reviews I’m working on now for The Nation and (an exciting first) the New York Review of Books.
This newsletter is meant to help interested folks follow my work. About once a month, I’ll highlight some of my more broadly relevant stories from Arizona Luminaria (I begin there on June 7) as well as collecting my writing from other outlets.
I may also share thoughts on some of the books/films I’m reading and viewing — a project I’ve thought about for a while. I’m currently finishing edits on my second book, which is about open borders and will be published by Verso sometime around the summer of 2023.
It takes A LOT of reading to write a book. And while I reference and cite many of those books in the text itself, I think it could be valuable for readers to get a closer view into that research process. Some of the topics I took a deep-dive into for my forthcoming open borders book, for example, were the long history and colonization of Australia, the transition in Europe from feudalism to capitalism, and the colonial wars in the Appalachians. I also read a bunch of anti-immigrant screeds (most of it pretty depressing, some of it frightening, and very little of it sensical) to try to better wrap my head around the ever-burgeoning closed border movement.
In short, this newsletter is going to be a gallimaufry of analysis, recommendations, and updates. I’ll be here if you want to reach me.
